This year’s targeted inspections carried out by the State Labour Inspectorate in the construction sector show that compliance with occupational safety requirements at construction sites remains a significant concern. A total of 446 violations were identified during the inspections, with violations found in nearly one-third, or 31%, of the companies inspected.

The most frequently identified violations involved unsecured trench edges, improperly installed or used scaffolding, as well as failure to comply with occupational safety requirements when working on roofs and carrying out other work at height. Such violations pose a direct risk to the health and lives of workers – a fall from height or the collapse of a trench can result in serious or even fatal consequences.

At some construction sites, the violations identified were so serious that immediate action by the State Labour Inspectorate was required. Significant breaches of occupational safety requirements were identified at 12 of the construction sites inspected. As a result, seven warnings and orders were issued to suspend operations at the site or part of it, while administrative fines were imposed in five cases.

The State Labour Inspectorate reminds employers that occupational safety requirements in construction are not merely a formality. Employers are responsible for assessing risks, ensuring a safe working environment, providing appropriate work equipment and collective and personal protective equipment, as well as ensuring that employees receive the necessary training and safety instructions.

Safety on a construction site begins before work starts. An unsecured trench, unsafe scaffolding or working on a roof without appropriate protection can cost someone their health or even their life.
