The Ministry of Climate and Energy (KEM) Warns Against Fraudulent Calls About Electricity Meter Replacement Observed in Estonia
Published Wednesday, 22 January 2025The Ministry of Climate and Energy (KEM) informs about fraudulent activities observed in Estonia, where individuals speaking in Russian contact electricity trader clients, pretending to be official representatives of the electricity trader, according to information provided by Estonian colleagues.
During the phone conversation, clients are told that due to the upcoming electricity synchronization on February 8–9, it is necessary to replace their electricity meters at home. For fraudulent purposes, individuals are asked to authenticate themselves in their internet bank using Smart-ID, thereby gaining access to personal data.
Residents in Latvia are urged to report such cases to their mobile service providers and the State Police if similar fraudulent calls appear in Latvia. Do not comply with the fraudsters' requests, do not provide personal data, and do not authenticate with Smart-ID.
“The synchronization process has no connection to electricity meters in homes or their replacement, nor to other technical activities related to household electricity connections. Synchronization is a significant event that has undergone careful, systematic preparation at multiple levels – readiness of physical infrastructure, development of transmission operator IT systems, regional cooperation, and coordinated actions of involved parties at the national level. The technical synchronization process itself is carried out by the electricity transmission system operators of the three Baltic states – Latvia (AS 'Augstsprieguma tīkls'), Estonia, and Lithuania – together with Poland's system operator from the European unified network,” explained Minister of Climate and Energy Kaspars Melnis.
In complex geopolitical conditions, public vulnerability is heightened. Before the upcoming synchronization on February 8–9, misleading information is more prevalent in the public sphere. The public is especially encouraged to critically evaluate information, not succumb to emotionally charged statements, and refrain from sharing unverified information. For up-to-date information, please follow the websites of KEM and AS “Augstsprieguma tīkls.”
